Lead Pollution In Haina

When you look at the sea you don’t see the horrors that lie underneath. The water and the earth are most filled with lead. Lead can cause birth defects. This problem was found when the Blacksmith Institute came out with their top 10 most polluted places in the world in 2006.  Some place like Paraíso de Dios (God’s Paradise) where 32% of the population live in poverty, is so intoxicated by lead. Most people had 7 times more lead in their blood than an average person. They had 71 lead concentrate ion (Blacksmith Institution, 2009). Metaloxa, battery recycling factory is the responsible for the amount of lead in this land. In its 20 years of work, they did not follow any of the environmental rules (IPS, 2007).

The Blacksmith Institute has helped clean most of the area making a park with it. This help clean the air, land and the blood of the kids, but they are still many polluted areas in the city of Haina. Blacksmith educated the kids with workshop about the problem lead caused and how to avoid lead exposure. The Institute and the governments worked together to fund the project with the help of some other donations gathering the amount US$ 154,000.  There are still a lot of horrors the lie underneath.
